So let’s begin!

Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) which was formerly referred to as Sahar International Airport until 1999, is the main airport serving the city of Mumbai. This airport has been named after the 17th century Maratha King Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The airport is quite well-known globally for its magnificent architecture and it happens to be the 2nd busiest airport of India after Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport in terms of passenger traffic. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) code of this airport reads “BOM” which is derived from the word Bombay – Mumbai’s former legal name.

In addition to being visually appealing, the Mumbai International Airport holds quite a number of records to its credit! On 9th December in 2018, this airport created a world record by handling a whooping 1,007 flights in a single day of operation, beating its previous best of 1,003 flights in a day.

This airport has already been adjudged as “World’s Best Airport” at Airport Service Quality Awards in 2017 by Airports Council International.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA)

The airport is operated by Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), which is a Joint Venture between the Airports Authority of India (26%) and the consortium (74%) of GVK Industries Ltd & South Africa’s Bidvest, which was commissioned in February 2006 to modernize the airport.

In February 2021, Adani Group acquired the shares of GVK Industries and Bidvests Group in Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), thereby taking over the majority stake in this venture.

Terminals At CSMIA

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport has 3 operational terminals, of which two terminals are reserved for commercial passenger flights and one terminal is dedicated to non-scheduled flight operations.

The Terminal-1 (Domestic) & Terminal-2 (International) which handle commercial passengers traffic, are located at a 15-20 minutes drive away from each other. Passengers need to be mindful of the fact that there is NO drive-way connecting these two terminals internally and one needs to make use of city’s Western Express Highway to reach from one terminal to the other.

Note: You must make sure to cross-check your ticket and reach the correct terminal for your flight, in order to avoid last minute hassles of navigating from one terminal to the other via the traffic-prone Western Express Highway.
